About

Amy Hackmann, M.D., FACS, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery at UT Southwestern Medical Center. She specializes in complex heart surgery and cardiothoracic transplantation.

Dr. Hackmann earned her medical degree at the University of Missouri – Kansas City School of Medicine. She completed a residency in surgery at the University of South Florida, a residency in cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Southern California, and a research fellowship in vascular surgery at Washington University in St. Louis. She received advanced training in cardiothoracic transplantation and mechanical circulatory support through a fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. 

Certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, Dr. Hackmann joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2019. Previously, she served as the Surgical Director of Lung Transplantation, the Director of Extracorporeal Life Support (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, or ECMO), and the Director of Mechanical Circulatory Support at Keck Hospital of USC. 

Dr. Hackmann's clinical focus includes all aspects of complex cardiac surgery, especially heart and lung transplantation and temporary and permanent mechanical circulatory support. Her research interests include outcomes in ECMO patients and nursing education in mechanical circulatory support. She serves as a reviewer for the American Society for Artificial Internal Organs Journal.

Dr. Hackmann is a member of the American College of Surgeons, the American Society for Artificial Internal Organs, the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO), the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS), the Western Thoracic Surgical Association, and Women in Thoracic Surgery. She is a committee member for both the ELSO and the STS.
